I Was Looking for the Way Forward… Then I Saw the Phoenix
Sometimes, we receive an answer before we even know what question we are asking.
I had been contemplating whether I should write this, and last night, I went to bed with a few thoughts on my mind and a feeling that something was beginning to shift. I wasn't searching for an answer, and I certainly wasn't expecting one to arrive in a dream.
But sometime during the night, I found myself on a journey.
I was driving behind another car, following it towards a wedding where I was going to be the maid of honour. I knew where I was supposed to be going, and I was simply following the road ahead of me.
But somehow, the car in front of me took a wrong turn. And instead of arriving at the wedding, I found myself at the seashore. It was there that the dream became something completely different.
There were people there, almost like a hidden tribe, unknown to the rest of the world. Somehow, I had entered their world through the shoreline.
They didn't frighten me. There was something peaceful and mysterious about them, as though I had stumbled upon a place that existed quietly beyond the world I knew.
Then they began pointing towards the sky. I looked up. The sun was rising over the water.
And as I watched, the most extraordinary thing happened. The sun began to transform into a beautiful phoenix.
I woke with the feeling that this dream wasn't simply a dream. It felt like a message. And the more I thought about it, the more I began to wonder whether perhaps the wrong turn wasn't really a wrong turn at all.

When the road changes
There are times in life when we think we know exactly where we're going.
We follow the road in front of us because it seems to be taking us toward the destination we have chosen.
Then something happens. The road changes. A relationship takes an unexpected turn. A career comes to an end. Something we had planned doesn't unfold the way we imagined it would.
Sometimes we can spend so much energy trying to get back onto the road we originally chose that we don't stop to ask where the new road might be taking us.
But what if the detour is part of the journey? What if the destination we thought we were heading toward isn't the destination we were meant to discover?
In my dream, I was following someone else's path. It was only when that path changed that I found myself standing at the edge of the sea, looking into something unknown.
The place between worlds
There was something significant about arriving at the shoreline.
The sea has always carried a sense of mystery for me. It represents something vast and unknowable, something that exists beyond what we can see on the surface.
And the shoreline is where two worlds meet. The familiar land. The unknown depths. Perhaps our own inner world can feel like that sometimes. There are parts of ourselves that we know intimately, while other parts remain hidden beneath the surface, waiting for the right moment to be discovered.
Sometimes healing begins when we become willing to stand at that shoreline and look a little deeper.
This is one of the reasons I find hypnotherapy so fascinating. By quietening the conscious mind, we can sometimes become more aware of the deeper thoughts, emotions, memories and beliefs held within the subconscious. It can create a space to gently explore what lies beneath the surface and perhaps discover something within ourselves that has been waiting to be understood.
The people who pointed towards the light
What stays with me most is that the people I encountered didn't point towards themselves.
They pointed towards the sun. Almost as if they were saying: Look.
And when I looked, I saw the phoenix.
The phoenix has long been a symbol of transformation, renewal and rebirth. But what struck me most about this particular phoenix was that it didn't rise from ashes.
It emerged from the sun. From light. That felt important.
Perhaps transformation doesn't always have to come from destruction. Perhaps sometimes we simply grow into something new.
We release what no longer belongs to us. We let go of old versions of ourselves. We begin to see our experiences differently, and slowly, something within us changes.
The past doesn't disappear. It becomes part of the wisdom we carry forward. And from that wisdom, something new can emerge.
Perhaps the detour is the message. When I think about the dream now, I keep returning to the same thought: What if we don't always need to know where we're going?
Perhaps there are times when we simply need to follow the road in front of us.
And if we find ourselves somewhere unexpected, perhaps we can pause before deciding that we've made a mistake.
Maybe the unexpected place has something to show us.
Maybe the people we meet along the way have something to teach us.
Maybe the shoreline we've arrived at is actually the beginning of a new chapter.
And maybe, if we look up, we'll discover something we could never have seen from the road we originally intended to take.
For me, the image of that phoenix rising from the morning sun feels like a reminder that transformation can arrive quietly. It doesn't always announce itself.
Sometimes it appears in an unexpected place, at an unexpected time, when we're simply following the road ahead.
Sometimes what looks like a wrong turn is actually a redirection.
And sometimes, when we finally stop trying to control the destination, we discover that we have been guided somewhere beautiful all along. Perhaps we just need to look up.
And see what is rising.
